Interested in having
Lance Mackey as a guest speaker?
Lance is well known as one of the most inspirational athletes in Alaska's history.

Born and raised in Alaska, Lance Mackey has grown up around dog mushing and tough times. His father, Dick Mackey, was one of the founders of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race which was officially organized in 1973, a 1,200 mile sled dog race across Alaska's wilderness. Dick went on to win the 1978 Iditarod race by ONE second. Alaskans still talk about that great race. In 1983, Lance's oldest brother, Rick Mackey, was the winner of the Iditarod. For Lance, this was a lot to live up to, as a son, as a little brother and as an up and coming dog musher. Lance wanted to win the Iditarod someday just like his dad and older brother. This dream almost ended when he was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2001 and underwent extensive surgery as well as radiation treatment.
He started the 2002 Iditarod with a feeding tube still in place but had to drop out of the race halfway into it. Lance took 2003 off to regroup. He is now considered cancer free .

In 2007 Lance was the first musher to cross the finish line in the Iditarod, winning it was a lifelong dream fulfilled. He was humbled by the crowd of people cheering him on as he ran in front of his team down front street, proud, exhausted and beaming with happiness. He hugged his mom under the burled arch finish line in Nome....you could hear him say "Dreams do come true mom, dreams do come true". There was not a dry eye in Alaska that day. Every Alaskan was proud and so happy for Lance. A hometown hero.

Alaskans are talking about Lance Mackey. He demonstrates the true spirit of what Alaskans are. His incredible back to back Quest and Iditarod championships show his grit and his determination. His appetite for "tough".

Lance will say "tell me it can't be done, by god... I'll give it everything I got to prove that it can. Can't is a word that I do NOT want to understand. I always do my very best, it may not always be number one, but it's the best I can do".

Lance has worked very hard to be where he is today and sacrificed beyond most peoples' comprehension. He is a husband, a father, a cancer survivor, a 2 time Iditarod Champion, a 4 time Yukon Quest Champion and a down to earth, regular guy.

It's attitude and appetite that make him who he is.
